FOCUS ON...

Global Health Challenge Project
- Lab in a Backpack

Lab in a Backpack is a diagnostic medical backpack that contains a portable energy source, which can power different diagnostic equipment within the backpack including a centrifuge, microscope, otoscope, opthalmoscope, and glucose monitor.

A team of Rice senior design students developed a lab in a backpack to help physicians deliver health care in remote areas of developing countries. The backpack has been used by teams of Baylor College of Medicine physicians on two trips to Honduras, improving the care of more than 1000 clients. Introductory design students have refined the backpack for use by more than 20 physicians in Tanzania, Malawi, and Botswana.

BTB International Intern, Lesotho
- Jenna Hook

Jenna is a senior bioengineering major, and she absolutely loves the Global Health curriculum within the BIOE department in fact, it is the reason she decided to stay a bioengineer! She is thrilled that she got to work in the BIPAI clinic in Lesotho in summer 2008 and implement the Lab in a Backpack project she worked on all spring semester. Visit the OwlsBeyondBorders Blog to read about her experience. Dumela Lesotho!
